Summary: The 5th Republican Debate took place on Tuesday, December 15th, and national security was the central topic. All the candidates offered a variety of solutions on how to handle the crisis in the Middle East. The overall consensus, however, that with Obama in charge, America is doomed. All the candidates tried to portray the ISIS problem as the biggest crisis since World War II, making the the atmosphere of the debate gloomy.
Two candidates that were attacked repeatedly were front runner Donald Trump and establishment favorite Marco Rubio. Trump was besieged by floundering candidate Jeb Bush, who got under The Donald's skin multiple times. Mr. Rubio came under heavy scrutiny from Ted Cruz and Rand Paul on his foreign policy and his "weak" immigration policy and at times Cruz seemed to get the upper hand.
The overall winner of the debate seems to be Cruz, whose poll numbers continue to steadily rise. His hardline conservative message seems to be resonating with many Americans and with a strong performance at the debate, Cruz now can be viewed as one of the favorites.
Questions:
Are the Republicans justified in portraying America being in big trouble? Why are all the candidates trying to portray America like this? Who do you think is the most reasonable candidate on the GOP platform? And finally, who do you think will win the 2016 Republican Primary?

I believe that the Republicans are slightly justified in portraying America as a target for danger. With the Paris attacks and the ever-present fear of ISIS, fear of another attack on the US is not out of the realm of possibilities. However, they are clearly exaggerating the problem in order to distinguish themselves from the Obama administration and the democratic pool of candidates. I am not sure who is the most reasonable candidates is on the GOP platform as I am not familiar enough with all the candidates to make a decision. I believe that Marco Rubio will win the 2016 Republican nomination because of his moderately conservative stances and his minority status, which I believe will earn the respect of the Republicans.
ReplyDeleteIn light of all the terrifying events that have taken place in the world, the Republicans are justified to speak about the dangers America is experiencing. The candidates are trying to reach out and gain popularity by speaking about these events. Many people are scared for the safety of America, and with candidates such as Trump talking about how America will fight back makes people feel protected. Similarly to Malia, I'm not super aware of the candidates and their positions, but from this one event, Rubio seems the most neutral. His minority will also help him in the polls, and compared to the other candidates, and he usually isn't portrayed in a negative way (such as Trump) in the media.
ReplyDeleteI think Republicans are justified in portraying America is in danger because the terrorist attaks happening around the world. The candidates are trying to gain popularity by giving a solution that calm citizens. I dont know who is the most reasonalbe candidates because I am not familiar with them. I believe Cruz is doing a better job since his poll number rise.
ReplyDeleteI feel the Republican message is justified to some degree, but not all issues they cover are necessarily just too, such as Trumps border crisis. The reason they make out America to be in danger is because its their best chance at winning the vote as fear and distrust in Obama resonates with many Americans right now. Personally, I don't find anyone them to be reasonable. I also feel Rubio will win the primary.
ReplyDeleteI believe that the Republicans are justified because of the unrest that many in our country feel especially with the recent terrorist attacks around the world. I think that they are portraying America like this so that voters will see how the candidates have goals of change and more safety when it comes to foreign policy. I personally haven't been keeping up with the Republican debates so I wouldn't be completely sure about who is most likely to win.
ReplyDeleteI believe that the republican party portraying the idea that America is in trouble is correct. Politicians should not try and hide the fact that this war is a huge threat and serious issue. I feel that they are trying to portray America this way to try and communicate the urgency with this issue and that is must be handled seriously and quickly. I think that the most reasonable candidate at this point in time is Marco Rubio, and I also believe that he will win the primary.

ReplyDeleteThey are justified in portraying America in trouble. Blaming the opposing party and the incumbent for current issues is not a rare practice in politics, especially leading up to election year. By listing all of the current problems America currently faces, the Republicans are attempting to make the voters see the elections as Democrats v Republicans, where a Democrat win will ostensibly make the problems worse.
DeleteI think that they are not completely justified unsaying that America is in trouble. I completely agree that there is a massive amount of turmoil and horrendous acts going on elsewhere in the world that force the deaths of many innocents and stress on other countries. However, America is not in the same amount of trouble as in something like world war two. I will say though that feign policy will be an issue that will continue to arise for Americas candidates. We must be careful when going forward and give all the support that we can, but we should not go in just guns blazing. They are trying got portray America like this to win If they get the American people worried about a problem that they are saying that they can fix, then they will tend to vote that way. It is all politics. I do not know if I can say who the most reasonable candidate is, I do not know enough about them and i do not agree with most if not all. I am not sure who will win, but I am betting Marco Rubio.
