Jeb Bush said Wednesday he supports Turkey in the dispute that resulted in Russian warplane being shot down Tuesday near the border between Turkey and Syria. Bush told CNN's Alisyn Camerota on "New Day." "If we're serious about that, Turkey needs to be an ally and we need to show support. I think President Obama was correct to say that every country has a right to self-defense."Obama said Tuesday that Turkey has a right to defend its airspace, but also urged the two countries to communicate better to de-escalate tensions as Russia continues operations near the Turkish-Syrian border. Turkey said they shot the plane after it violated Turkey's airspace and ignored 10 warning. However, Russia claimed their plane was down over Syrian territory by an air-to-air missile from a Turkish F-16 jet. Bush said Wednesday that Russia could be an ally in the fight against ISIS, but added that would require the U.S. setting requirements for working with Russia and Russia abandoning its alliance with Iran in support of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
Question: Do you agree with what President Obama said Tuesday? Is this right to say when we are ally with Russia in the fight against ISIS? Who should be our ally and who is our ally now?
I agree with Obama's comments that every country has the right to defend themselves. However, I don't think we are in any way shape or form Allies with Russia. Our allies lie in the United Nations excluding Russia of course. In order to defeat ISIS other countries need to join up with the United States to fight ISIS and get rid of them as threats to not only the US but other countries as well.
ReplyDeleteI agree with what was said about the Turkey-plane situation. I don't think however, as stated, that Russia would have to give up allegiance with Iran in order to ally against ISIS, nor do I think they ever would. Siding against ISIS does not mean supporting Assad. Supporting Asaad is simply what we are currently looking at as one of the most practical options in fighting ISIS. In fact, Russia already is an ally against ISIS, but only against them, not along side of Assad. Iran, along with China, is one of Russia's most important allies and this relationship will not be substantially harmed by Russia's hand in this conflict.
ReplyDeleteObama's point of view on the every country has the right to defend themselves resonates with me. I find that Obama took the right approach to encourage Turkey and Russia settle the situation out. I believe that the US will continue to keep its present allies and keep its same focus. Although Russia is not considered an "ally", the US will work with Russia in order to stop ISIS. In reality the US has barely any allies! ReplyDeleteFlying a military plane in another country's airspace is an act of war, President Obama is correct that Turkey was correct for standing their ground. It is safe to say that we are allies with Russia in only the fight against ISIS. The U.S. and Russia are not on good terms otherwise, but as long as they both have a common goal, there is no harm in working together.
ReplyDeleteI agree with what President Obama said. Every country, of course, has a right to defend its airspace. On top of that, I also agree that he believes Turkey and Russia should communicate better in order to try and resolve the tensions between the two countries. Even though this event caused some tensions, it is taking away from the bigger problem, ISIS. I believe that the countries should try to resolve their issues as quickly as possibly and redirect their attention back to the war with ISIS. In order to eliminate ISIS, I believe that the United States should work with the United Nations to come up with an agreement and a way to try and defeat ISIS. Russia would be a great ally in this war, and if working with them meant setting requirements, I think that the United States should do what is necessary to eliminate the threat of ISIS.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Obama that all counties have the right to defend their territory. Turkey did not act sporadically either as their is evidence that they gave the Russian plane several warnings. I think that the US is only allies with Russia when the issue at hand is related to ISIS. The US does not have to remain loyal to them in unrelated occurrences such as this.

ReplyDeleteIn the contentious Middle East, we should support the most stable, prosperous and democratic country in the region in Turkey. Turkey has and still is a key ally. When we were in the Cold War, we placed our nuclear weapons in Turkey because of their relative close proximity to Russia. While we need to consider Russia an ally in the fight against ISIS, supporting Turkey, an established ally for decades, takes precedent over siding with Russia. Therefore, Obama in this sense is correct in taking Turkey's side
ReplyDeleteI agree with what President Obama said about Turkey having the right to defend its airspace. I think it is important that Russia and Turkey settle on a territory agreement. By doing so, the two countries can set their disputes aside and focus on the issue at hand: defeating ISIS. Although the United States and Russia have not always had the best relationship, I believe that Russia would be a powerful ally in the war against ISIS.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Obama that countries have the right to defend themselves. And in the case of Turkey and Syria, if the plane was intruding on airspace an seemed like it would cause danger, it was in Turkey's best interest to shoot down the plane. The US is allies with France and England, the tensions between the United States and Russia are too high to be considered allies.
ReplyDeleteI am in agreement with Obama over the fact that every country has a right to defend themselves when the need to do so arises. Furthermore, I believe that it will be difficult for Russia and the US to ally with each other considering that they were highly adversarial to each other during the Cold War. However, despite the fact that Russia and the US rarely see eye to eye, I believe that if an alliance could be made, it would provide the US an ally in their conflict against ISIS. Additionally, their relations may improve slightly after they have allied against a common enemy.
